1) Bowing on ScaleS/Arpeggios CLICK HERE Play & say notes names!

2) Muller Rusch - Lesson 15 & Lesson 16

3) Solos & Etudes - pg. 8 (Etude 13)

1) Sitting Posture- sit on the right corner edge of your chair, feet flat on the floor, and

    straight back.

2) Concert Rest - while sitting, hold the viola upright on the left knee & hand gripping

the body of the viola with your left hand.

3) Playing Posture- bring your viola up to left shoulder. It should come straight out

with the chin rest against the neck. Side of chin should fit snuggly. The viola will be

tilted at 45 degrees. (You should be able to hold the viola with out any hands if

done properly as long as a shoulder rest is on the instrument.)

4) Pizzicato (plucking)- With the viola up in playing posture, put the tip of your right

hand thumb against the corner edge of the finger board. Bring the tip of your first

finger around to the top of the strings and pizzicato the C-G-D-A Strings. (the C-

    String is the fattest string)

5) Fingers on the Finger Board

    - ALWAYS KEEP A STRAIGHT WRIST

    - First align your (left hand) thumb next to the first piece of tape. (keep it straight)

    - The tip of the thumb should be level to the finger board from the side of the neck

and not be sticking out. (it should be allowed to rock under the neck)

    - Twist your hand around so the fingers can curl up around the top neck but make

sure the hand is far enough back that the fingers can get over the tape.

    - Once done check to see if you have a whole between your thumb and first finger

underneath the neck of the viola

-Be sure to keep your fingers curved at all times and use the tips of the fingers. (the

finger nail should NOT be touching the string so keep the fingernails trimmed)

6) Bowing

-Then curl your Left Hand thumb to the bottom of the bow grip where it meets the

     frog.

    -  Curve your 2 middle fingers around the top of the leather grip at the first knuckle.

So you are making "C" like shape.

    - Tilt your right hand to the right so the index finger makes contact with the stick.

    - Curl and bring out your index finger across the top of the bow between the first

      and second knuckle.

    - Lastly, your pinky should be curved on top of the stick with a slight gap from the

      ring finger.
